DanceAfrica is one of the country’s largest cultural festivals devoted to African dance. It is a yearly event that has been in existence since 1977 and held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) during the Memorial Day weekend in New York City. The cultural spectacle is packed with not only dance but music, art, film, community events, food and an outdoor bazaar of eye-catching offerings like African-inspired jewelry and clothing. The late Chuck Davis, a dancer, and choreographer widely regarded as America’s foremost master of African dance created the sprawling, multiday communal celebration that has been reprised in several cities throughout the country.
